◎简 介
1898年，丹尼尔•普莱维尔（丹尼尔•戴•刘易斯）独自潜入深深的矿井，这个沉默寡言的男人像旧金山所有淘金者一样，希望自己能在这片土地中挖到金沙银沙。然而，丹尼尔还没找到让他发财的金沙，就整个人从梯子跌到井底，摔断了一条腿。丹尼尔仍然坚毅地在井下生存，挖到了自己的第一桶金。
1911年，丹尼尔再次来到广袤的南加州，这里一片荒芜，然而在丹尼尔眼里这片土地则是巨大的财富。如今的丹尼尔身边带着收养的儿子H•W•（戴隆•弗雷泽），没有老婆，依旧沉默寡言。他从当地人手中低价买下一大片土地，开始了自己的新计划：挖石油。丹尼尔事先就知道这块土地裹着大量的石油，他不停地购买土地，当地人所崇拜的神父埃利•桑德（保罗•达诺）隐约觉得丹尼尔收地的行动背后有着巨大的阴谋。这个一心想在自己领域中做出一番大作为的年轻神父利用宗教信仰号召他的信徒与丹尼尔作对。然而已经拥有大片土地的丹尼尔已经开始挖石油，滚滚而来的石油为他带来巨大的财富，丹尼尔很快成为美国著名大资本家。埃利•桑德渴望得到丹尼尔的财富，于此同时，世界上还有许多人同样从丹尼尔身上瓜分财产，从政界人士、商人、甚至是Z.f本身。而丹尼尔非常讨厌人类，他认为人类就是自私、肮脏、贪婪的生物，而他要做的就是获取更多的财富，将自己与他所讨厌的人类隔离开来。这时，一个自称是丹尼尔同父异母兄弟的男人找上门来，丹尼尔让他在自己的油田里工作。一场意外爆发，丹尼尔唯一关心的人类，他的养子H•W•在这场事故中丧失听觉，父子之间的感情越来越淡，最后竟成为对手……
